We have a dream: Translation Village Project, a case study
The Translation Village Project, an initiative of Localex Translation in Turkey, aims to bring together freelance translators and other independent language professionals from all over the world to critically think about traditional working and production environments and conditions in a more relaxed, peaceful and ‘natural’ environment away from the stress of big cities and traditional discussion models.
The concept of “workplace” is shifting thanks to the increased accessibility of Internet, technology and alternative working models. Now, people are able to work as an employee of a company remotely (from home or at a remote office) or work regardless of their location by founding their sole proprietorship and offering services to third parties. One of the most affected sectors from technology is the translation industry. More and more language professionals are shifting towards freelance working model either as a result of their personal preferences or due to the employer’s desire to decrease costs. Although freelance working model seems very attractive and comfortable, the basic problems accompanying this model are still far from being solved.
In this sense, our age offers interesting opportunities for independent language professionals among others. There are many independent language professionals who reap the benefit of these opportunities personally: the ones travelling around the world while translating, constantly mobile people; the ones living right in the middle of nature in a small town in a more stable way…
Translation Village calls freelance translators and other independent language professionals to discuss new living-learning-producing-working ways from a more humane perspective, and discuss and re-interpret the “free and independent” in favor of freelance translators and independent language professionals.
This case study will tell about the story of this project, its background, development processes, current and foreseen stages and invite freelancers to be part of this exciting project.
